Tergar Osel Ling Monastery, Kathmandu Valley

Where you will live

Three months immersed in a living monastery

When you arrive at Tergar Osel Ling, you step into a world consecrated for practice. Set on a hill outside Kathmandu, the campus is surrounded by over 300 monastic residents, sacred sites, and the quiet rhythms of daily contemplative life.

The monastery is not merely a setting. It becomes a container. The bells, the liturgy, the shared silence shapes you in ways a retreat or online course cannot replicate.

What makes it different

Six things you will experience that you won't find elsewhere

FBE (Foundations of Buddhist Experience) is not a course you take — it is an environment you inhabit, where study and practice deepen each other continuously.

01

Original texts by Mingyur Rinpoche

You study primary manuscripts composed by Mingyur Rinpoche himself, alongside classical Indian and Tibetan sources — the depth of a monastic shedra brought into direct relationship with your practice.

02

Study woven into daily practice

When you meditate each morning and then open the texts, one illuminates the other. The questions that arise in practice become the questions you bring to the teaching — and the teaching gives them somewhere to land.

03

Personal mentorship throughout

One-on-one and small-group guidance from senior faculty runs through all three months. Your own questions become the thread — developed into a Social Impact Project that extends the teachings into your actual life and work.

04

Three vehicles, one coherent path

You study Abhidharma, Lojong, Madhyamaka, and Vajrayana not as separate subjects but as a single coherent arc — each one deepening your understanding of the next. The tradition holds together, and so does your practice within it.

05

Life in a living monastery

Three hundred monastics share the campus with you. Bells before dawn. A rhythm of practice continued for generations. Being here shapes your understanding in ways study alone cannot reach.

06

A gateway or a complete journey

You may come for three months and leave complete. Or you may find it opens something you want to follow — through the full 27-month Certificate, spanning the full arc of the tradition. No pressure to decide before you arrive

Who this is for

You will thrive here if…

What you share with your cohort is not a level of attainment — it is a readiness to go deeper into the practice you already love.

Students of Mingyur Rinpoche

When the online teachings and retreats have opened something in you, and a more structured, immersive path feels like the natural next step, FBE is where that deepening happens.

Tibetan Buddhism practitioners

You will arrive with some familiarity, and leave with a comprehensive foundation in the three yanas — grounded in the rigor of a genuine monastic education.

Experienced meditators

When you have a serious personal practice and want to understand it more fully within a traditional framework and community, this is the environment you have been looking for.

Contemplatives in everyday life

You are not a renunciant, but you sense there is something more to discover. FBE offers a profound yet down-to-earth entry into a living tradition — one that will return with you when you go home.
